📚 Why We Started the Book Witches - Our New Book Podcast

We didn’t mean to start a podcast.
It was one of those ordinary afternoons — the kind where you find yourself standing in a bookstore, overstimulated in the best way, laughing at something your best friend said while holding a book you’ve both argued about at least three times.
That’s when someone overheard us.
We were mid-conversation about a book Ynez didn’t finish and I (Aleks) was defending like my life depended on it. I launched into a spontaneous, impassioned plea — complete with references, character arcs, and probably too much emotional investment. The woman nearby listened, laughed, and said, “You know what? I’m going to give it another shot. Your enthusiasm kind of sold me.”
That was the moment I turned to Ynez and said, “Okay wait. Let’s do a book review podcast.” She excitedly said yes.
We’ve tossed around the idea of a podcast before, but nothing really stuck. We thought about doing something yoga-related — that’s a major part of both our lives — but we were never able to get together and begin the process of that specific project.
Then came the bookstore moment. And somehow, that conversation — the books, the debate, the energy between us—just clicked. It felt like something worth recording. Not because we think we’re literary experts or have some profound insight no one else does, but because this is the kind of stuff we talk about anyway. We both happen to think that books are vital; in fact, they might even be the most important thing in the world (besides yoga, of course).
We chose the name Book Witches because it felt true to how we experience reading — as something intuitive, powerful, and often a little mysterious. Books cast spells. They stir memory, emotion, imagination. They challenge us and change us.
The witch, to us, isn’t just a symbol of magic — she’s a symbol of sovereignty. Of intuition, of deep feminine wisdom, of the woman who refuses to shrink or be silenced. That’s the energy we bring to how we read, how we speak, and how we live.

We don’t always agree on the books we read, and that’s kind of the point. Our conversations push us to think more deeply, not just about the writing itself, but about what it stirs up. Sometimes a single novel leads us into a discussion about gender, grief, relationships, or the spiritual weirdness of being alive right now.
The Book Witches podcast is where the conversation continues — where anyone who values thoughtful reading and open dialogue is welcome. It’s a space for questions we’re still living into, for perspectives that challenge us, and for stories that shift the way we see the world.
We believe reading is one of the most powerful things we can do — not just to learn, but to expand, to reflect, to heal. Books teach us about ourselves, about others, and about the systems we’re shaped by. They unsettle us in necessary ways. They nourish. They disrupt. They offer portals — and sometimes, a mirror.
Thanks for reading — wherever your curiosity takes you.
See you between the lines.
